My artistic practice requires me to delve deeper into the layers of my belief systems and interrogate assumptions, in order to understand how my perception of reality influences my work. I am interested in learning about different philosophies that investigate the nature of human experience and our common bonds e.g., Carl Jung’s ideas of the collective unconscious, Joseph Campbell’s ideas of the monomyth, Taoism’s embrace of reality as an indivisible totality.

My painting process is exploratory and intuitive. I start a new painting without a visualized outcome in mind. Instead, I usually start with one element (such as the subject, a color palette, a type of mark making, or an environment), and then I embrace a stream of consciousness approach to develop the image until I feel I’ve completed the story. It feels like I am solving a puzzle.

In the last three years, I have focused primarily on large paintings. They allow me to depict full body subjects that appear life size and invite the viewer to step into the work. My experience in painting murals has changed my awareness of scale and inspired the size of this recent body of work.

Reinier Gamboa was born in Camaguey, Cuba and lives and works in Miami, FL. Gamboa received a BFA on a full scholarship from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA in 2006. Gamboa’s practice explores the duality between subject and environment, and reality and illusion. He is guided by his belief that each person’s perception of reality is always colored by their knowledge, life experiences, senses and belief systems.Gamboa’s practice in acrylic and oil painting is grounded in portraiture and his strong foundation in drawing which can be seen in his diverse mark making. Selected Solo exhibitions include “Boundless” [Scope Art Fair, Miami Beach, FL, 2021]; “Multitudes” [Miami Art Society Gallery, Miami, FL, 2021]. Selected group exhibitions include “Catalyst” [Threyda Gallery, Denver, CO, 2021]; “Leap / Rewind, NWSA Faculty Exhibition” [New World Gallery, Miami, FL, 2021]; Miami Art Society group exhibition at Scope Art Fair [Miami Beach, FL & New York, NY 2019- 2020].
