I started drawing at the age of two… my first drawing was an ambulance and the Sun. My father and grandfather were my first teachers. In the living room of our home in Camaguey, Cuba, my father painted a mural of a landscape. I was fascinated that a portal into another world existed inside my home and felt so real. My grandfather and I played a drawing game where he scribbled some random lines, and I would try to draw something recognizable out of his marks. These early experiences shaped my relationship with art as a tool for self discovery and relating to other people.

So much of our existence is a mystery, and exploring this mystery through the language of images is my calling in life. To me, drawing and painting is a journey in which the end result is open ended. Having an open mind is critical to my process as an artist. Some of my pieces have taken years to complete, because I needed time to grow and change my perspective. During the process of creating, I’ve learned that just because we can see with our eyes doesn’t mean that we have taken the time to observe what’s in front of us. In the created space, I allow myself the room to improvise and make mistakes, to change my understanding of what is appearing in front of me and thereby allow others to witness my evolving thought process.

My work dances on the line between realism and abstraction. I seek to create worlds in which what’s recognizable acts as an entry point for the viewer into the unknown. The human figure appears often in my work as an invitation for the viewer to step in and identify with the depicted subject. I am saying, “Come into this world, you and I are this person, what you see is a reflection of us.”
